Getting hooked on good vibes
The transformative powers of fly fishing, to help with symptoms of PTSD, cancer, anxiety and depression, are well documented. As someone who has struggled with my mental health, I’m not lying when I say fly fishing has saved my life several times and continues to be a core part of keeping my mind strong.
It’s why I’m a passionate supporter of, and volunteer with, Casting for Recovery (CfR) Victoria - a non-profit organisation that runs life affirming fly fishing retreats for women with breast cancer.
Established in the USA in 1995 by a breast cancer reconstructive surgeon and a professional fly fisher, CfR now runs in six countries around the world including Australia. Endorsed by medical professionals, the program is proven to be physically and mentally rejuvenating for participants. The tranquility of being near water, the kindness of the CfR team, and the cameradie of fellow cancer survivors makes people feel connected, cared for, and gives them hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Casting for Recovery retreats are delivered by experienced altruistic fly fishers and healthcare professionals. I was an instructor at the inaugural Victorian CfR retreat in 2019 and the memories still give me goosebumps. I’m pumped to join a dozen other legends to help instruct again at our second event in March 2023!
Unfortunately, many Australians are directly impacted by cancer or know someone who is. I lost my grandfather to bowel cancer and have close friends whose lives have been forever changed by this cruel disease. Casting for Recovery retreats offer genuine respite, through the gentle art of fly fishing, from the pain of cancer. These programs rely on the kind donations of the community and I would welcome you to visit the Casting for Recovery Victoria website and give what you can:
